City raising road to alleviate chronic Canatara flooding

The City of Sarnia is taking steps to prevent chronic flooding near the central roundabout in Canatara Park.

After having to pump water from the area last week, the city has decided to raise the road and pathway.

The project is expected to get underway this week.

Director of Engineering Mike Berkvens said they'll be pulverizing the road and adding granular material to build up the area.

"So we're going to go from a low-lying area directly to the east of the pond to around the inner circle and meet up where we left off last year," said Berkvens. "So that area will be built up with new asphalt and then we'll put a thick armour stone retaining wall at the pond to build up that area to stop the area from flooding in the future."

Lake Chipican Drive in Canatara Park will be closed for four weeks for repaving work extending north and east of the central roundabout.

Residents will still have access to Canatara off of Christina Street, but won't be able to drive through the entire park.

While he doesn't have a cost estimate, Berkvens said the project is included in last year's budget.
