Residents urged to have emergency kits at the ready

Sarnia's Red Cross is stressing the importance of residents having emergency kits at the ready.

The agency was one of many on hand at Friday's Emergency Preparedness Day at Clearwater Arena.

Emergency management volunteer George Rudanycz said everyone has to be prepared for extreme weather events that are becoming more common due to climate change.

"Sarnia-Lambton, probably as many are aware, has an issue of flooding, loss of power, and snowstorms, and that's why having an emergency kit is so important," said Rudanycz. "With the way climate change is causing changes you never know when you need to be prepared for a disaster."

Rudanycz said the Red Cross hands out survival kit cards to help residents stay prepared.

"It suggests that you have a radio with batteries, certainly a flashlight for power outages, first-aid kit, extra car keys, canned food, bottles of water for at least three days, clothing for at least one change per day, sleeping blankets, personal supplies, of course medication if you require them, and a whistle to get others attention," he said.

Rudanycz said Sarnia's Red Cross at 416 East St. N is happy to answer any emergency kit related questions at (519)-332-6380.

Around 100 displays were featured at Friday's event, highlighting tips on how to prepare for emergencies and showing some of the equipment first responders use when they are called out to an incident.
