Temporary curbs near school to have calming effect

If you have children who go to Errol Road Public School, or you live in the area, you know how busy the intersection of Errol Road East and Indian Road can be.

The city has come up with a pilot project to calm traffic there.

Director of Engineering Mike Berkvens said around $30,000 will be spent to install temporary curbs for the 2019/2020 school year.

"Rather than do a permanent road diet, we're looking at an experimental method of doing it, rather than come to council with a full-blown [plan to] replace the curbs and do the bump outs to make it a safer crossing," said Berkvens.

He said extending the curbs at the intersection will reduce the time children are in the roadway, make crossing guards more visible and slow traffic.

Berkvens said the pilot will let staff test different layouts to maximize safety and if a layout is successful they can make permanent curbs and reuse the temporary ones at other locations in the city.

Council approved the pilot project at its May 6 meeting.
