LGS demolition ramping up

Neighbours will start seeing the main building of Lambton Generating Station come apart this spring, into the summer.

Decommissioning and demolition project manager Dan Roorda said they'll be taking apart the cladding so it will look more like a demolition site from the roadway.

"About 20 percent of the demolition is already complete," said Roorda. "Recently there was some activity closer to the road where the parking garage was taken down. That's been largely cleaned up. A lot of the activity is happening behind the plant."

Overall, Roorda said demo has been going very well and they hope to have the bulk of the main building down by the end of this year and the smokestacks dismantled in 2020.

In March, Ontario Power Generation had a contractor remove a section of conveyor bridging that crosses St. Clair Parkway adjacent to LGS.

Roorda said they decided to expedite that job to limit liability.

The conveyor was used to move coal from the St. Clair River dock into the building to fuel the Courtright power plant.
