Woman conned out of $60K in rural Lambton

A 35-year-old woman in rural Lambton has been defrauded $60,000 in a romance scam.

Lambton OPP launched an investigation last Thursday which revealed the woman had established an online relationship with an unidentified man that lasted eight months.

The man claimed to be a 43-year-old law enforcement agent born in Canada, who was living in the United States and doing undercover work overseas at times. He told the woman he needed help to cover hospital bills, plane tickets and other visa travelling expenditures.

The victim wired money and sent pre-paid gift cards to help him.

Police determined all of the money transfers were sent to bank accounts in Nigeria.

The OPP, RCMP and Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre continue to investigate.

The OPP is reminding people to be cautious of romance scams and to never send money to someone you've never met.
