School boards discourage walkout but won't suspend students

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board is aware of planned student protests locally and provincially next Thursday.

Superintendent Scott Johnson said they've shared with students that brought plans to their attention, that they believe there are other ways to share their voice and displeasure with government bodies other than a student walkout.

"We're going to be reminding students of the potential risk to a walkout and the safety risk of being off site," said Johnson. "We're going to remind students that it's not a school sponsored event and that we expect them to be in class."

The walkouts are being organized as part of a province-wide movement on April 4 to protest changes to the education system.

Johnson said students will be marked absent if they participate and parents will be informed.

Both the Catholic board and the Lambton Kent District School Board said, however, that students will not be suspended if they participate.
