Point Edward council keeps tax hike below 2 per cent

Despite an increase of more than 70 per cent in recycling costs, the Village of Point Edward has kept this year's tax increase to less than two per cent.

Council set an operating budget of about $4.3 million that includes a hike of 1.73 per cent in the amount to be raised through taxation.

The municipal portion of the tax bill will increase $12 per $110,000 of assessment.

Mayor Bev Hand said it was a challenging budget.

"The work we do this year prepares the village for growth and allows outside investors access to dependable infrastructure," said Hand in a news release. "Council and staff spent considerable time reviewing the budget documents and after a great deal of discussion have approved a robust plan for the coming year."

Capital spending of $3.5 million was approved.

Projects include road remediation for Christina Street and Livingston Street, and rejuvenation of the Monk Street tennis courts to create an inclusive recreational space for residents and visitors.

Reserves were also bolstered for major reconstruction of St. Clair Street and the future purchase of fire department vehicles.

Final tax bills will be mailed in the early part of June with due dates of July 2, and October 1.
