Competing cartoons at CANstruction

Local schools, businesses and community groups will be showing off their creative skills at Lambton Mall.

It's the eighth annual CANstruction for the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

Executive Director Myles Vanni said, last year, the event collected over 38,000 pounds of food for the food bank, about a one month supply.

He said the suggested theme this year is cartoons.

"We've got a team building Snoopy and his doghouse or SpongeBob SquarePants and Alice in Wonderland's March of the Cards," said Vanni. "It's going to be really great to see the teams create these structures and some of them will have thousands of cans of food in them."

Vanni said there are 16 teams competing this year. Teams will be assembling the structures Saturday, March 23 with judging set for Sunday, March 24.

Awards will be handed out for Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Most Cans, Rookie Team, Structural Ingenuity, Junior Outstanding Structure, Judges Favourite and Best Use of Theme.

The People's Choice award will be announced at a later date.

Vanni said this year, residents can also vote for their favourite structure online at www.canstructionsarnia.com beginning March 25. The structure that raises the most money wins.
