Blood donor clinic honouring young leukemia victim exceeds expectations

A blood donor drive Tuesday in support of a young Sarnia girl with leukemia exceeded expectations.

Over 130 people attended a clinic at the Dante Club for three-year-old Deklan Biggers, and 118 units of blood were collected.

Canadian Blood Services spokesperson Stephanie Wilkinson said their goal was 100 units.

She said Deklan's parents, Brad Biggers and Shannon Shepherd, were thrilled with the response.

"They were there and they were donating themselves and very happy to see such a great response from the community," said Wilkinson. "It's always so nice to see everyone coming together and putting others' needs before their own."

Wilkinson said it can take up to eight donors to support one person through a week of leukemia treatment.

The next blood donor clinic in Sarnia is March 23 from 9 a.m. until noon at Temple Baptist Church.
