Council considering SGH redevelopment plans Monday

With demolition complete, work is now underway to redevelop the former Sarnia General Hospital site on Mitton Street.

Sarnia council is being asked to approve a draft subdivision plan from GFive Inc. Monday.

Mayor Mike Bradley thinks it's a win for everyone involved.

"It's a positive move forward," said Bradley. "People have seen the demolition and are now asking what's the future? This was in the original proposal, to bring forward housing on that site and that's a very good sign."

Plans include 11 single family residential dwelling lots for the north block of the site fronting on Essex Street, with two commercial blocks fronting on Mitton Street.

"It also allows the city, as part of our separating sewers project in the southern portion of the city to stop pollution to the St. Clair River, to do some major work there."

The combined sewer on Essex Street is to be separated between Mitton Street North and Mackenzie Street North in order to service the proposed lots and existing properties.

Council is being asked to accept a nearly $900,000 reconstruction tender from Van Bree Drainage and Bulldozing, with part of that bill being paid by GFive.

The final bricks of the old hospital came down in November.

Demolition and abatement took 14 months to complete.
