St. Clair Township's Alert FM phased out

St. Clair Township's Alert FM service has been phased out, and local residents are now relying on MyCNN for emergency notifications.

Alert FM was in place since 2010, using the FM radio signal to send out messages to residents with transmitters.

Fire Chief Walt Anderson said the aging technology became redundant.

He encouraged residents to sign up for MyCNN to receive phone, text, or email alerts.

"We think this is a better system, a more reliable system. It's quicker because if it's one of the big three emergency alerts, it'll come right out of dispatch. It doesn't have to come to one of our officers first to put the alert out," he said.

Anderson said they'll save about $5,000 annually by getting rid of Alert FM.

Those who bought transmitters can bring them to the fire station or dispose of them in e-waste bins around the municipality.

You can sign up for MyCNN by visiting the CAER website.
