Vessel traffic began moving again Tuesday on the St. Clair River after icebreaking operations near Russell Island.
Two freighters that had been at anchor for a couple of days near Walpole Island were able to move on, after the Canadian Coast Guard ship Samuel Risley and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Hollyhock cleared heavy ice.
The vessels weren't stuck and there was no emergency, but they needed escort.
It's hoped milder temperatures this week will help alleviate ice buildup.
The Canadian Coast Guard says the safety of mariners and the public is their top priority.
