TSL recommends hotel tax for Sarnia-Lambton

The price of local hotels, motels and Bed 'N' Breakfast operations could be on the rise.

Tourism Sarnia Lambton is recommending the establishment of a four per cent municipal accommodation tax, which applies only to the room cost portion of an overnight stay.

Executive Director Mark Perrin said since the provincial tax was implemented January 2018, roughly 20 municipalities, including London and Windsor, have jumped on board.

Perrin said it may be time for Sarnia-Lambton to do the same.

"I know in looking at other municipalities similar to ours, it could be close to $1 million generated [per year]," he said. "Sarnia-Lambton residents are paying that fee when they stay in hotels and motels in other communities, so I think it's fair that if people from outside Sarnia-Lambton are staying here, they're expected to pay the same to help build our infrastructure and tourism."

Perrin was making a presentation to county council Wednesday but it's up to individual municipalities to decide if they want to implement such a tax.
