Fiddick's evacuation a community effort

A large group of volunteers helped Petrolia North/Enniskillen firefighters and Lambton EMS with a large scale evacuation at Fiddick's Nursing home Monday evening.

Director of Care Mandy Judah says staff noticed an odour and some smoke in the basement area of one of the units at around 4:30 p.m.

They shut off the power and called 911.

Judah says about 45 additional staff, family members and volunteers showed up to help in response to a Facebook post about the incident.

A total of 62 residents from two units were moved.

Lambton EMS Manager Steve Pancino says it was a coordinated effort.

"We worked in cooperation with fire services, the police and nursing home staff that were all on scene," said Pancino. "We had an operation supervisor, up to four ambulances at the scene. We assisted in moving patients to a safe side of the building."

Two residents were taken to hospital for assessment.

Judah said the power was back on by 8 p.m. and the residents were returned to their rooms.
