Sting fall late 4-3 in Sudbury

The Sarnia Sting were burned by a former ally in Sudbury Saturday night.

Former Sting player Adam Ruzicka scored the winning goal late in the third period as the Sudbury Wolves beat Sarnia 4-3 at Sudbury Community Arena.

The Sting are still in third place in the OHL West Division with 49 points, and currently sit in the seventh playoff spot.

Franco Sproviero cashed in for the Sting with a shorthanded goal in the first period, just before the halfway point. Shots were 12-10 in favour of the Wolves in that frame.

Sudbury came alive in the second period with three straight goals. Drake Pilon tied the game for the Wolves at 7:44, then Blake Murray scored twice to extend Sudbury's second-intermission lead to 3-1.

Sarnia fought back with back-to-back goals in the final frame. Hugo Leufvenius scored on the power play at 7:41, then Ryan McGregor scored the equalizer at exactly halfway through the period. Ruzicka's game-winning goal was scored for Sudbury at 16:57.

McGregor said the Sting got off to a slow start. "I don't think we had as much drive as we would of liked coming into the game. They played hard and they're tough to play against and I don't think we matched that very well early."

The Sting captain liked the way the team rallied. "I thought we did a good job of pushing back in the late second and the third. Overall I thought it was an okay game but we definitely have to clean some things up tomorrow in North Bay."

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was the winner in net for Sudbury, with 23 saves. Cameron Lamour stopped 35 shots for Sarnia.

Sarnia travels to North Bay Sunday afternoon to face the Battalion. The pregame show starts at 1:35 p.m. on 103.9 FM - 1070 AM CHOK.
