Slippery conditions lead to several crashes

There were a number of collisions on area roadways Wednesday morning.

Roads were slippery and messy following a period of freezing rain overnight Tuesday and this morning. A freezing rain warning ended just after 6 a.m.

On Twitter, OPP reported two tractor trailers in the ditch on the westbound Highway 402 at Glendon Drive in the Strathroy area.

A tractor trailer also left the westbound highway near Hickory Drive and entered the ditch.

OPP attended a two-vehicle crash around 6 a.m at Highway 40 and Bickford Line in the Courtright area. A vehicle also left Waterworks Road near Michigan Line. No word yet on injuries.

There was also a crash on eastbound 402 between Front Street and Christina Street.

OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk said although the freezing rain warning is over, he's stressing caution on the roads.

"We are responding to several motor vehicle collisions all through the west region," said Sanchuk. "So, if you are travelling this morning, please make sure you take your time and reduce your speed. Also, clear off your windshield. We've had several people stopped this morning already that have cleared off little spots on their windshield. You're not only putting yourself in danger, you're putting everyone else at risk on the roadways."

Sanchuk said they're responding to several crashes on area roadways.

"All of the collisions we're having right now are people that are speeding like it's 90 degrees outside. Winter tires aren't going to stop you from sliding off the roadway if you're travelling at a high rate of speed," he said. "There's slush mixed with snow, and we need people to use some common sense when they get behind the wheel."

Sarnia police on Twitter also reminded motorists to adjust their driving to the changing road conditions and slow down.

Colder air is expected to return Wednesday night with the mercury once again below freezing.
