New police communication system a tall order

The Sarnia Police Service has city council approval to build a new tower at Sarnia Fire Station 5.

The proposal for the station on Telfer Road at Blackwell Road received some opposition from neighbours.

Police Chief Norm Hansen said no matter the location, concerns would likely have been expressed.

"Our consultant showed us the coverage areas, and by putting a larger tower there, we could negate the need to put two or three more towers in other areas," said Hansen. "So, it was partially a cost-saving measure, but also no matter where we put it, it's going to be a residential area -- at least some of them -- and people will oppose it."

The tower is just one part of a multi-million dollar project to upgrade radio communications.

Four new towers are needed, and significant repairs will be made to one old tower, to be able to hold the weight of the modern equipment.
