UPDATED: Snow squalls and extreme cold Sunday into Monday.

Environment Canada issued a warning overnight saying long-lived snow squalls will impact Sarnia-Lambton Sunday into Monday.

The weather agency said under the snow squall bands, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to heavy snow combined with blowing snow, and snow will quickly accumulate.

Snowfall amounts of 10 centimetres to 15 centimetres (6 inches) can be expected Sunday with local amounts up to 25 centimetres possibly occurring Sunday night as the snow squalls intensify and become stationary. Visibilities will also be reduced to near zero in blowing snow due to strong northerly winds gusting to 70 km/h.

As the winds shift slightly to the northwest Sunday afternoon, the squalls are expected east of Sarnia with the strongest expected Sunday night from near Bright's Grove east towards Forest and extending inland to the south.

The squalls are expected to weaken Monday afternoon.

Environment Canada also issued an extreme cold warning late Sunday morning for Sarnia-Lambton with wind chill values near minus 30 C overnight.

OPP reported poor road conditions Sunday.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you become stranded in a vehicle do not leave. The vehicle offers a form of protection from the cold. A single person walking through the snow is harder to find than a stranded car or truck. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
