Cold weather alert for Sarnia-Lambton

Lambton's medical officer of health has issued the first cold weather alert of the winter season for Sarnia-Lambton.

The mercury is forecast to drop to - 15 C (5 F) Saturday night, with wind chill values in the -20 C to -30 C range into Monday morning.

Lambton Public Health said overexposure to cold temperatures can be hazardous and can lead to frostbite and hypothermia.

Local residents advised to take precautions by dressing in layers, shielding exposed areas from the cold wind like the head, neck and face and by limiting time spent outdoors, especially at night.

Environment Canada still has a special weather statement in effect for Sarnia-Lambton.

Southwestern Ontario is expected to remain on the northern fringe of a major winter storm tracking well south of the Great Lakes this weekend.

The latest forecast for Sarnia called for a total accumulation of about 10 centimetres of snow (four inches) Friday night through Saturday but areas close to Lake Huron are also likely to receive additional amounts on Sunday due to snow squalls on brisk northeast winds.
