Sarnia shelter struggling to meet homeless demand

The local homeless crisis is taking a toll on a Sarnia shelter.

River City Vineyard men's shelter is at capacity every night and they're constantly having to turn people away, said Manager Owen Vroom.

The Mitton Street shelter can house a maximum of 22 individuals each night, and Vroom said often times it's those in their late teens and early twenties with addiction issues who are seeking a bed.

Vroom said with a number of homeless men either couch surfing or on the street, something needs to be done to address the growing problem.

"Priority for me is I would like to see Sarnia have a rehab centre. Basically, I consider us as part of the rehab program right now, which is fine-- you know we try to accommodate a lot of people. It's just maybe we need more facilities leaning towards that kind of place," he said.

Vroom said the current homeless situation is the worst it's been in his 13 years at the Vineyard, and that a local rehab centre would provide another alternative for Sarnia's residentially challenged.

"We try to accommodate who we can, but we have to hold it at about 22 individuals because of staffing and money issues," he said.

Vroom said they're always looking for help through monetary, food and clothing donations.
