Volunteers needed for lights tear down

Sarnia's Celebration of Lights is looking for volunteers to help with the community tear down Saturday.

Volunteers are asked to gather at Centennial Park at 8:30 a.m. on January 12 to register. Students are reminded to bring along their time sheet.

Treasurer Colleen Murphy said there were about 42 light installations on display at the park over the holidays.

The larger displays, including the arch over Front Street, have already been dismantled.

Murphy said after having lost major sponsors for the event, they've come to rely on donations from residents and small businesses to keep the tradition alive.

"It's a circle that we go through every year but we manage to put up the lights," said Murphy. "We may not have a big show next year or the year after, but I'm sure our lights will still go up."

She said in 2016 there was an outpouring of support from the community and businesses and that donations helped carry out the event over the last three years.
