Fire destroys century-old home

A two-storey century-old home in Plympton-Wyoming has been destroyed by fire.

Fire Chief Steve Clemens says firefighters were called to a chimney fire on Monday just after 4:30 p.m., on Michigan Line between Oil Heritage Road and Mandaumin Road. However, while on route, the call was upgraded to a structure fire.

"Flames had extended to the outside of the building by the time we arrived," said Clemens. "We're looking at extensive damage and we're still completing the investigation right now, but we're looking at probably a total loss of the home and contents due to mostly smoke and water damage."

He said luckily everyone escaped without injury.

"The occupants were a young family -- husband, wife and two young children -- so, they were able to see the fire right away and exit the building and everybody was safe," said Clemens. "They had just checked their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, batteries had been replaced, so everything was in good working order. But, thankfully they were up and aware of the fire that was taking place. They actually tried to extinguish it themselves."

Clemens said a damage estimate has yet to be determined.

Both the Wyoming and Camlachie stations responded and Warwick firefighters assisted with their tanker.
