Nolan DeGurse scored twice, including the game winner on a penalty shot, to lead the Sarnia Legionnaires (15-9-0-4) to a 3-2 win over the LaSalle Vipers (14-14-1-2) in GOJHL hockey action Friday at the Brock St. Barn.

DeGurse opened the scoring with a powerplay goal 6:05 into the first period. Isaac McLean and Logan Gardner picked up assists. Captain Alec DeKoning made the score 2-0 Sarnia just over three minutes later, with helpers going to Jon Sanderson and William Redick.

Rookie Zane Dalpe inched the Vipers closer with a second period goal. DeGurse’s penalty shot goal in the third period put Sarnia up 3-1. LaSalle captain Brett Vorshuk scored shortly after but it wasn’t enough as the Legionnaires held on for the victory.

The Legionnaires scored on one of five powerplay chances and held the Vipers scoreless on five opportunities. Sarnia goalie Jacob Knowles made 28 saves on 30 shots. Will Tragge turned aside 25 of 28 Legionnaire chances.

Sarnia is fourth place in the Western Conference standings with 34 points, three up on LaSalle and one behind the Chatham Maroons.

The Legionnaires are back in action on Saturday night in Komoka. They’ll have a holiday break before hosting the league-leading London Nationals on January 3, 2019.
