United Way agencies facing possible cuts

With just over a week to go, hopes of reaching goal in this year's Sarnia-Lambton United Way campaign are fading.

Executive Director Dave Brown said they still need to raise $334,000.

"We're down to the final week or two and right now we're at $1.666 million, which represents 83.3 per cent of our $2 million goal," said Brown.

Last year at this time, the campaign had already reached it's $2 million target.

Brown said missing the target would mean funding cuts for the some of the 19 local agencies they support.

"Certainly there will be cuts, we anticipate that there'll be some," said Brown. "But, we know we have to increase some of our funding for some of our seniors programs for example. There's more and more seniors, they've got more and more needs, they need to stay in there own homes because of the shortage of seniors housing, so that's been a challenge ."

Agencies support by the United Way include Big Brothers Big Sisters Sarnia-Lambton, Canadian Mental Health Association and Lambton Elderly Outreach.

The United Way is in the final year of its three-year community investments, and is reviewing the agencies for the next cycle beginning April 1, 2019.
