Legionnaires defeat St. Marys Thursday

The Sarnia Legionnaires (13-9-0-4) survived a wild third period to defeat the last place St. Marys Lincolns (7-18-1-1) 6-4 in GOJHL hockey action at the Brock Street Barn on Thursday night.

William Redick scored a pair of goals just three minutes apart in the first, giving the Legionnaires a 2-0 advantage after one period. Blair Butchart got the Lincolns on the board in the second period. The game was 2-1 for the Legionnaires heading into the third.

Jon Sanderson notched an insurance goal early in the third period. Ridick picked up an assist on the play to give him three points on the night. St. Marys scored back to back goals within a 1:10 span, but Isaac McLean put Sarnia back on top 4-3 just 1:18 later. The Lincolns briefly tied the game 4-4 but goals from Clark Allair and Logan Gardner sealed the 6-4 Sarnia win.

Legionnaires goalie Nolan DeKoning made 26 saves on 30 shots while Kyle Curtin stopped 31 of 37 Sarnia shots. Each team was held scoreless on three powerplay opportunities.

Sarnia is fourth place in the Western Conference standings with 30 points, 12 points behind first-place London. Leamington is second with 35 points, and Chatham is third with 33.

The Legionnaires play again on Saturday night at home to the Leamington Flyers.
