Competitive gamers from Sarnia and Windsor squared-off Friday at Lambton College's first ever major esports event.
Lambton Esports Program Coordinator Matthew Hutchinson said around 40,000 viewers were expected to tune in as Lambton's varsity team played St. Clair College from the Sarnia campus.
Hutchinson said the inaugural Border City Battle was organized entirely by Lambton esports students.
"The operational plan, the broadcast plan, marketing and promotion, social media, everything," said Hutchinson. "They were also responsible for running the event, so that comes with its own bumps and bruises, but it's really exciting and they're trailblazing this experience for hopefully more programs to come."
Hutchinson said they had a live broadcast just outside the gaming arena during the event.
The teams went head to head in five games: Fortnite, Overwatch, Rocket League, Hearthstone and League of Legends. The team that won three of the games was declared the winner.
Both teams are in their second year of competitive play, and Hutchinson said St. Clair is already planning to add an esports program of their own.
The Lambton Esports program is the first of its kind in Canada, and currently has 65 students enrolled.
