Sarnia church reaching out to meat thieves

A Sarnia church that had $1,000 worth of meat stolen from an outbuilding is reaching out to the culprits.

Bishop Andy Withers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints said sometime over the weekend, thieves broke into their freezer and stole meat that's used to feed those in need.

Withers said the church is always willing to help everyone in the community, and that the culprits didn't have to steal from the church to find that support.

"Whoever's out there, if they want help, they're welcome to come back and we'll help them out. I'm not looking to begrudge them or have any hurt feelings or anything like that towards them, it's just unfortunate what's happened," said Withers. "You don't have to be a member of our church to come and ask for help. So that's what's most hurtful about this. Help's there if they wanted and needed it."

Withers said the stolen meat would've provided monthly dinners for the Good Shepherd soup kitchen and The Hub for the next six months.

He said now, the church will have to restock its shelves.

Withers said Sarnia police have been notified of the theft.
