Federal funding for Courtright wastewater upgrade

Upgrades to Courtright's wastewater treatment plant are on the way, thanks to a $1.2 million investment from the federal government.

The project will include the installation of a new system to improve odours and lower the plant's use of potable water, which the government says will protect the environment.

St. Clair Township Mayor Steve Arnold said he's hopeful the project will alleviate concerns from area residents.

"It's been an ongoing thing now since we put the site up, it's been very frustrating for council as well as the residents," said Arnold. "When we did the initial design work in the mid-2000s there was not going to be any odour coming from that site. Then, once it got built according to the engineer drawings there was an issue there. We've been working at it ever since."

Arnold said the funding, from the Green Municipal Fund, includes $127,000 in grants and the rest is a loan guarantee.

He said the second phase of the project could include structural changes, piping in inlets, and construction of a total enclosure if needed.
