Boards want students to consider a skilled trades career

The shortage of skilled workers in Canada is hindering growth for many companies who simply can't find anyone to replace retirees.

The Lambton Kent District School Board and St. Clair Catholic District School Board are hosting an "Experience the Trades" event November 14 and 15 at the Chatham-Kent John D. Bradley Convention Centre.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Consultant Nicole Beuckelare said many students in Grades 7 to 12 will learn about careers in the skilled trades.

"The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program run in most school boards across the province is an attempt to get students interested in the skilled trades while they're in high school," said Beuckelare. "It involves students taking co-ops in the skilled trades area and gives them the chance to learn while they're still young, before they decide what they want to do as a career. This unique event offers students the opportunity to explore a variety of professions in a hands-on environment."

Parents and guardians are invited to attend a special evening session on Wednesday, November 14 from 5:50 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Chatham-Kent John D. Bradley Convention Centre.
