Simon Warder squash tournament supports prostate cancer

The seventh annual Simon Warder Memorial Prostate Cancer Squash Tournament is on this week at Huron Oaks in Bright's Grove.

Over the last six years, the tournament has raised $157,000, most of which has gone to Bluewater Health's Prostate Cancer Clinic, with the rest donated to St. Joseph's Hospice.

Organizer Gary Delavigne said they have 46 pros from 24 countries taking part.

"They're competing for a spot in the Professional Squash Association world championships," said Delavigne. "They were so impressed with what we did that they granted us that. So, that's the equivalent of getting an invite to go to Wimbledon or The Masters."

Delavigne said 60 amateur players are competing in the amateur division.

Games are open to the public, with the viewing area offering a 360 degree view of the action.

The finals at the event, sanctioned by the Professional Squash Association, are set for Saturday evening.
