The Sting lose in a shootout in Kitchener

The Kitchener Rangers edged the visiting Sarnia Sting 6-5 in a shootout.

Arbor Xhekaj opened the scoring for the Rangers at the 3:25 mark of the first period.

26 seconds later Sarnia captain Ryan McGregor (7) tied the game then Justin McCombs (2) scored for the Sting.

Kitchener's Riley Damiani notched the game at 2-2 before Curtis Egert (10) scored his first goal of the season to give the Sting a 3-2 lead after the opening frame.

In the second Calvin Martin (5) scored a short handed goal to make the score 4-2.

The Rangers tied the game with goals from Jonathon Yantsis and Damiani.

Franco Sproviero (5) put the Sting back in front with less than four minutes remaining in the second but Kitchener would tie the game again on a goal from Richard Hugg.

There were no goals in the third period forcing a scoreless overtime period.

Richard Hugg scored the shootout winner for the Rangers.

Sarnia goalie Aidan Hughes made 33 saves while Lucas Pfeil stopped 30 shots for Kitchener.

Sarnia associate coach David Legwand said the team competed hard. "The compete was good. They played hard but a couple of mistakes and puck management situations ended up in our net. So if we clean up those things and they come to work and compete with that attitude every game we're gonna get our fair share."

Saturday the Sting are home to Sudbury at 7:05 p.m. The pregame show starts at 6:40 p.m. on 103.9 FM - 1070 AM CHOK.
