The president of the Sarnia Professional Fire Fighters Association is disappointed that replacing a dilapidated fire hall on Colborne Road has been delayed for yet another year.
Ken Dwinnell is especially upset that he had to hear about it through the media.
"There was no communication," said Dwinnell. "We met in June and the discussion was the report was going to council to get the project moving in September. In September at the strategic plan meeting, there were whispers of a change of order and the next thing we know, we hear about the delay in the local media."
The 64-year-old fire station was to be rebuilt beginning in 2019, but it has been decided that replacing the department's 18-year-old tower truck is more important as it's reaching the end of its lifespan. It's become unreliable with no parts available should it break down.
Station 3 has been plagued with health and safety issues including mould. A new furnace had to be installed last December after firefighters were left shivering in the cold.
Both projects are estimated to cost $1.9 million.
The new city council must approve any expenditure during December budget deliberations.
