'A Day in the Life of a Soldier'

A unique Petrolia project is giving local army cadets a feel for what young soldiers experienced 100 years ago.

Members of the 2563 Petrolia Army Cadets spent two weeks, digging eight, 10-metre-long fire trenches at Petrolia Discovery to commemorate the last 100 days of the First World War.

Retired Army Captain and Civilian Volunteer Dave Anderson says they're hosting an event Saturday called "A Day in the Life of a Soldier."

The 12-to-17 year old cadets will be wearing period costumes in the trenches, paying homage to the capture of Bourlon Woods by the 1st Canadian Corp in northeast France in 1918.

"It was the high ground west of Cambrai and it was consider key terrain, and of course it was captured by the Canadian Corp in the fall of 1918. Once Cambrai fell, a logistics hub which supported the enemy hub in this sector, it pretty much ended the war," said Anderson.

Each cadet researched local soldiers with the 149th Battalion and the 1st Hussars, and will share their experiences at tomorrow's free event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Petrolia Discovery site.
