Police encouraging residents to register loved ones with dementia

Sarnia police are hoping to update and add to their vulnerable persons registry Saturday.

Community Response Division Inspector Jeff Hodgson said they're partnering with the Alzheimer's Society of Sarnia-Lambton to once again register loved ones living with dementia.

He said the information is very valuable to officers, and can now be accessed immediately on the tablets recently installed in all cruisers.

"Now when we have a photograph of the person with dementia who goes missing, we're able to pull that photograph up very quickly in the cruisers with our new tablets," said Hodgson. "So, this is a matter of our technology meshing with our previous registry and bringing things up to date."

He says three out of five people living with dementia will go missing at some point in their journey with the disease and if they're not found within 24 hours, half of them will have a serious injury or die.

Registration will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Sarnia Police headquarters, at 555 Christina St. N.

Caregivers are asked to bring a current photo of their loved one, along with proper identification and health information.
