Tree planting initiative branching out

A local environmental organization is inviting you to spruce up Sarnia-Lambton.

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is hosting a pair of tree planting events as they aim to plant upwards of 80,000 seedlings this year.

The first event is in Forest September 29, and the second goes in Sarnia October 20.

Healthy Watershed Specialist Jessica Van Zwol said they provide as many opportunities as possible for residents to plant trees, saplings, and seedlings throughout their watershed.

"Over the last five years, we've helped landowners and communities plant over 380,000 seedlings," she said. "It's really cool when a volunteer, especially volunteers who are children, can plant a tree and come back to a park or a public place year after year and see how much their tree has grown, and see what they have contributed to the local environment."

Van Zwol said St. Clair has also planted 600 trees in Sarnia over the past five years.

The organization is taking part in the TD Tree Days campaign, which is looking to plant 1-million trees across North America by 2030. So far, they've planted over 300-thousand.
