Legionnaires defuse Rockets in GOJHL action

Jon Sanderson scored twice and added an assist to help the Sarnia Legionnaires (4-2-0-0) to a 5-2 victory over the Strathroy Rockets (0-5-0-0) in GOJHL hockey action Thursday at the Brock St. Barn.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period. Legionnaires captain Alec DeKoning scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, while Cody Clerc responded for the Rockets. DeKoning also had three assists on the night to give him 12 points, putting him in a tie for fifth place in the entire GOJHL.

Sarnia opened things up with three second period goals off the sticks of Aaron Jamieson, Sanderson, and Blake Butler to make the score 4-1. Jamieson poked the puck off of the stick of Brendan Mairs at his own blue line and scored on a partial breakaway. For Butler, it was his first career GOJHL goal after netting 14 with the Lambton Jr. Sting AAA Minor Midgets last season.

Sanderson scored his second goal of the game 6:48 into the third period, and Emmet Pierce rounded out the scoring for Strathroy with a powerplay goal three minutes later.

Legionnaires goalie Jakob Knowles made 29 saves on 31 shots against. Joshua Diamond made 29 saves on 34 shots faced for the Rockets. Sarnia scored twice on four powerplay opportunities. They had a lengthy five minute powerplay late in the second after Strathroy's Zachary Berriault was called for a head check on Greg Hay.

The Legionnaires will be back home on Thursday, October 4 against the St. Marys Lincolns.
