Sentencing Set For Bluewater Health Nurse

A sentencing date has been set for a former Sarnia nurse who admitted to stealing fentanyl from Bluewater Health.

David Cartwright pleaded guilty in April to stealing the opioid after a 2017 police investigation led to his arrest.

The 33-year-old appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice Wednesday and will be sentenced September 19.

In a statement to the court, the former surgical nurse said he was thankful he was caught, because he needed something to break the chain of his addiction to painkillers, and that he likely would've died if he wasn't arrested.

Cartwright closed by saying he knew what he was doing was wrong, and understands the need for punishment.

The Crown is seeking a nine month jail sentence, while the defence argues an 18-month community or house arrest sentence is appropriate.
