Veterans Honoured At Enhanced Sarnia Park

Major upgrades at Sarnia's Veterans Park are complete now in advance of this fall's 100th anniversary of Remembrance Day.

A new wooden sign featuring hand-painted poppies and hand-carved maple leaves was put up August 2.

The sign is surrounded by a garden and three large rocks carved with the words "Lest We Forget."

Other additions to the park over the past four years include a Vimy Ridge commemorative bench, four English oak trees, a storyboard, self-watering planter, and poppies near the Cenotaph for the anniversary of the War of 1812.

The 19th century "Big Tom" cannon and a Light Armoured Vehicle III, or Kodiak, were also relocated to the park from Canatara Park.

City Parks and Rec Director Rob Harwood says it's all been done in honour of our veterans.

"It's appropriate for us to continue to make improvements to that park. I mean it is one of the oldest parks in town and we should be proud of it and we are now," says Harwood. "If you look around in the park there's been some great things that have happened there and it's only through collaboration with a lot of different groups."

The new sign was created by local sign-maker Dave Beatty and paid for by Communities In Bloom.
