Walleye Fishing Derby Kicks Off Friday

The Bluewater Anglers' annual walleye fishing derby gets underway at 6pm Friday evening, with a chance to win $500 for the heaviest fish.

Chairman Al Dezort says about 75 people usually take part in the boat and shore event.

He says the overnight derby wraps up at 9:30am on Saturday morning, noting the walleye are most active at dusk and dawn.

"Around here at this time of year they probably range from 1.5 lbs to 4 lbs," says Dezort. "There are bigger fish in the system but they tend to be hanging out in either Lake Erie or parts of Lake Huron."

The boundaries are the St. Clair River south to Fawn Island, east to Grand Bend, and up the US side to Lexington.

You must have a valid fishing license and a $10 ticket for the event.

Tickets are available at Buck's Bait and The Outdoorsman until 4:30pm Friday, August 10.
