Corunna Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

Local media and social media are being credited with helping identify, and bringing about the arrest of an armed robbery suspect in Corunna.

Lambton OPP say a variety store and grocery store, in the area of Lyndoch St. and Hill St. Corunna, were held up just before 7am Sunday.

Police say a man allegedly displayed an unspecified weapon in a threatening manner and made off with some cash from the grocery store.

Constable Chris Doupe says within hours of putting out a media release about the incident that included a surveillance photo, they received tips that led to the identification of the suspect.

"Once I create a media release and send it out through our channels, our local media do pick it up and it ends up on Facebook and Twitter, and quite often we do receive a favourable and quick response," says Doupe. "Thankfully, people in our communities are involved in social media, as are we, and in this case, it was quite effective."

The OPP arrested 21-year-old Jessie Gaudet of Corunna Monday.

He's charged with robbery with a weapon, robbery with intent, two counts of wearing a disguise, and weapons dangerous to public peace.

Gaudet is scheduled to appear in Sarnia court September 10.
