Michigan Authorities Identify Drowning Victims

Police have identified two men who drowned in Port Huron's Black River Wednesday.

The St Clair County Sheriff's department says 47-year-old Robert John Lewandowski of Port Huron fell out of an inflatable dinghy near the Domtar Paper Plant a quarter-mile south of the I-94 bridge.

They responded just after 2:30pm.

A second man, 32-year-old Sumith Jacob Alex of Clinton Township, had jumped off a nearby pontoon boat to try to save the first man.

Neither of them resurfaced.

The Port Huron Fire Department sent a boat and the U.S. Coast Guard deployed a boat and a helicopter to search for the men.

With the help of the Sheriff's Marine Division Dive Team using sonar, one body was recovered at about 8:30pm about 150 feet upriver in 16 feet of water. The second body was found an hour later a short distance upriver. They say the water temperature was 17 C (62 F).
