More Expansion Plans At Vision Nursing Home

Vision Nursing and Rest Home wants to build a $5-million dollar four-storey apartment building on its property.

The housing project at 229 Wellington St., right at the corner of Crawford St., would include 21 one bedroom rental apartments designated as "affordable" and 15 bachelor units intended for seniors.

CEO Heather Martin says hopefully it will help address a shortage of affordable housing in the city.

"We in particular have identified that women over the age of 65 with limited pensions could benefit from having access to some well designed accommodations," says Martin. "So were looking forward to attracting that group of individuals."

She says construction, which would require the removal of about 21 parking spaces in the lot adjacent to Crawford St., could start in the next few months.

"We're in the process of getting the final drawings done now with the architect. Looking at potentially in July getting some of the site work started and we should have a shovel in the ground by the middle of the summer."

City council will consider rezoning and bylaw amendments for the project Monday.

In 2016, Vision expressed interest in transforming the former Sarnia Collegiate Institute & Technical School into a condominium development.

Martin says while they haven't abandoned the idea, the school is still in use, it has yet to be designated as surplus land and they wanted to address the need now.

"Until the school board makes some decisions there's really not much we can do. We've explored opportunities. We have a nice project idea on the shelves and should the opportunity arise then we will have a look at it, for sure."

Vision has had a presence in south Sarnia for 44 years, with a nursing home, retirement home and nurse practitioner clinic located on the property.
