Bridge Work To Cause U.S. Bound Traffic Delays

$3.6-million in steel repairs to the American side of the westbound Blue Water Bridge span start Monday.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Jocelyn Hall says it's a preventative maintenance project.

"We've identified areas where there is a little bit of corrosion that's starting on some of the steel," says Hall. "We're going to come in, remove that corrosion and make any repairs that we need to. If those areas need to be strengthened in any way, so that it is brought up to the highest standard that we would expect."

She says motorists heading into the United States from Canada may experience some delays as contractors carry out the work, expected from May 21 through November.

"It looks like they will start staging on Monday and once work really gets underway, drivers can expect single and double-lane closures intermittently," says Hall.

The westbound span is the original bridge that was built over the St. Clair River in 1938.

The second span which brings motorists into Canada opened in 1997.
