City Firefighter To Be Awarded In Vegas

A city firefighter is being recognized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for his dedication to public fire safety education.

Mike Otis of Sarnia Fire Rescue Services will receive a $2,000 Star Scholarship Award and will attend the NFPA's Conference and Expo in Las Vegas this June.

Chief John Kingyens says Otis has really embraced social media since he took over the job a few years ago, and he believes that's what made him stand out.

"They were looking for people that were actively getting the message out," says Kingyens. "He's demonstrated this commitment all along. He's always popping up on messaging and other social media programs he's using."

Otis is in charge of the fire departments Facebook and Twitter pages, which are often updated on a daily basis.

Kingyens says while Otis is in Las Vegas he will have the chance to network and participate in training sessions and other conference events.

The NFPA will recognize a total of 12 people from Canada and the United States for providing consistent and innovative outreach to their community.
