Council Pedals Forward With Bike Lanes

Sarnia council is taking advantage of provincial cash to roll forward with bike lanes on Colborne Rd.

Colborne Rd. will be reduced to three lanes, with a bike lane going from Lakeshore Rd. to Capel St. in both directions.

A portion of Cathcart Blvd. will also be equipped with a bike lane to get to Canatara Park, and an undetermined route south of Exmouth St. is planned.

Councillor Bev MacDougall believes it will open doors.

"Young people who are going to come to our community, want to come to a community that's progressive, that encourages people to be out and active in their community," says MacDougall. "We're not going to eliminate all the risk, but we do need to move forward progressively as a community and that means we make a place for everybody to get out and enjoy what we have to offer."

Councillor Andy Bruziewicz opposed the recommendation.

Installing signs and removing existing pavement markings and replacing them with new ones is estimated to cost $250,000.

The project is being 80% funded by the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling Program grant.

The city's portion, approximately $50,000, will come from the Transportation Master Plan Capital Account.
