Sarnia-Lambton Supporting 'Jersey Day'

Sarnia Fire and Rescue Service is taking part in a nation-wide initiative Thursday in the wake of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy.

Firefighters will wear hockey jerseys or green and gold on Thursday.

Public Education Officer Mike Otis says it's important that first responders observe "Jersey Day."

"We definitely want to show our support and participate in this," Otis said. "It's such a terrible tragedy and as first responders, unfortunately, we relate to seeing some terrible things in our careers. We want to be there for the victims, survivors and the first responders that had to attend the scene."

City of Sarnia staff, as well as Bluewater Health employees and volunteers and local students, will also participate.

The Town of Petrolia is encouraging residents and businesses to participate

"This touches our community also," said Mayor John McCharles. "Hockey is at the heart of Petrolia and we send our sincere condolences to the families and communities affected by this tragedy."

Petrolia hockey organizations are holding a short ceremony on the lawn of the Greenwood Recreation Centre at 5pm.

Flags at Sarnia City Hall and the Greenwood Recreation Centre will be lowered to half-mast for the day.

Other communities, including the Town of Plympton-Wyoming, have planned similar displays of community support.

A Go Fund Me initiative for the victims, their families and survivors, has raised over $8.2-million.
