Mayor Wants Private Operator To Manage Arena

Sarnia's Mayor believes there would be benefit in going back to a private operator to manage the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

Mike Bradley says that would draw more events to the arena and, in turn, generate more revenue.

"To me, having the private sector involved leads to a much more dynamic facility because they are going to do their best to make money and bring people into the building," says Bradley.

"It would be my hope that if we ever looked at the operation of the building by the private sector again that we would see entertainment again, and we'd see the type of things that would create a multi-use building. That's the way it was designed to be, and that's the way it was for 17 years."

In the meantime, council will consider a request from the Sarnia Sting to take over the sale of luxury suites from the city when it meets on Monday.

The team is concerned about the potential for 17 suite contracts to not be renewed for next season.

Many suite holders are expressing issues about the base lease price of $13,500.

If the Sting run the suites, the city would save $90,000 in renovation costs, and $24,000 in annual salary.

The city would also be guaranteed revenue of $225,000 annually from 25 suite lease agreements and get half of the revenue generated from the sales.
