Lambton College Hosts Winter Open House

As the first major expansion in Chemical Valley in 40 years gets underway, perhaps you're thinking about a career change.

Lambton College is hosting its Winter Open House Saturday.

Spokesperson Cindy Buchanan says a Technology Forum will headline the event, featuring a lineup of presentations from local plant managers.

"Including representatives from NOVA Chemicals, Imperial Oil and Bruce Power, and they will speak about the local labour market as it pertains specifically to Lambton College graduates," says Buchanan. "At 10:30am the Technology Forum will take place and guests will learn more about why local projects, such as the recent investment of NOVA Chemicals in St. Clair Township, have led to an increased demand for skilled trades and technology grads in our region."

NOVA announced just before Christmas that it will build its new $2.2-billion polyethylene plant in St. Clair Township and that it's expanding it's Corunna cracker by about 50% to provide ethylene feedstock to the new facility.

Construction of the world scale plant is expected to create up to 1,400 jobs and 150 full-time workers will be hired once it's complete.

Buchanan says recent graduates and co-op students will also share their own experiences and career prospects during the forum.

She says they will also be highlighting their own $50-million expansion and renovation.

"Details about the renovation and upgrade of Lambton's world-class Centre of Excellence in Energy and Bio-Industrial Technology will be available, including a full list of training labs and learning facilities," says Buchanan.

Information about the new Nova Chemicals Health and Research Centre and Athletic Fitness Complex, currently under construction, will also be shared.

She says there will be tours, opportunities to speak with faculty, staff and students from all of the programs and shuttles to the Fire and Public Safety Centre of Excellence, the Skilled Trades Training Centre and Lambton College Residence.

The open house goes from 10am to 2pm.
