Cold Weather Swamps Local CAA

Over 400 calls were made to the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) in Sarnia-Lambton Wednesday because of the bone-chilling temperatures.

Around three-quarters of the issues were battery related, with the rest being for tow trucks or light service issues.

Because of the high volume of callers, the wait times ranged from 27 minutes to around two hours.

CAA Public Relations Manager Kaitlynn Furse says they received twice as many calls in southern Ontario.

"Across our entire region, we typically get around 3,000 calls on a normal winter day," says Furse. "[On Wednesday], we've got upwards of 6,500 calls."

Furse says to help avoid these problems, you can turn off your radio and lights when trying to start your car. She says this allows the battery to use as much power as possible.

Those who are worried about battery issues should be checking them around twice a year.

Cold temperatures and biting windchill are forecast to continue into the new year.
