Tracing History Through Street Names

It has been one of the most searched categories on the Sarnia Historical Society's webpage.

Thanks to meticulous research by residents Tom St. Amand and Randy Evans, the origin of every Sarnia street, except about 20, is now known.

Evans says the project wouldn't have been so successful without the help of hundreds of residents.

"That was the beauty of this project," says Evans. "It's not just what we able to uncover, but also the public participation assisting Tom and I. We had over 500 contributors to the project, giving us information on various streets. It truly was a real community project that people really got behind and we are really grateful for their input."

When Mayor Bradley asked the pair to track down leads on street names three years ago, a few dozen of the 740 names, were still unknown, so the pair went back to the public and managed to come up with a more complete list.

You can find the origin of your street name on the Sarnia Historical Society's website.
